When it comes to açai smoothie bowls, often times they are packed with sweet fruits (which are delicious), but provide no healthy fats or protein to satiate your hunger and prevent a blood sugar spike. Let’s see what we can do to make your smoothie bowl a little bit more filling, so that you aren’t feeling hungry 30 minutes after eating!

Nutrient Breakdown

Antioxidants - berries are always a great source of antioxidants, as they contain polyphenols and anthocyanins (beneficial plant compounds). These antioxidants help to scavenge free radicals in the body, helping to slow down cellular aging reducing oxidative stress on the body. Antioxidants help to neutralize the effects of free radicals on the body, helping to prevent the development of chronic disease over time (1). Vitamin C is a well known antioxidant that is also needed for energy metabolism, and this smoothie happens to have an awesome dose of Vitamin C thanks to daily nourish

Fiber - Did you know that adults need 25-38 g of fiber per day (females 25 g; males 38 g), but our actual intake is typically much lower - usually around 15-20 g daily? High dietary fibre intake is associated with:

What Is Açai

Açai is a berry that is high in antioxidants, fiber, and omegas 3,6, 9. While not essential for this smoothie bowl (you could swap for other frozen berries) it does have a delicious juicy flavour, and is especially loaded with polyphenols and anthocyanins - phytonutrients that give berries their deep purple and blue colours. We used pure, unsweetened and frozen açai berry, found at our local health food store. 

Tips for Making the Açai Smoothie Bowl

  • Add only a little bit of water / liquid of choice at once - this helps to reach the optimal thick smoothie bowl consistency (we don't want it watery)!
  • Add a source of healthy fats and protein such as daily nourish and nomz energy bites to give your smoothie bowl more macronutrients and keep you feeling full for longer 
  • Blend low and slow, stopping to scrape down the side of the blender or use a tamper to push the contents of your smoothie in towards the blades of your blender. 
  • Use frozen ingredients for the best thick consistency - frozen banana makes your smoothie bowl creamy and delish, kind of like nice cream!
